The Upper Room Home of Prayer community hopes that our readers will find in these pages solid teaching on this profound and core mystery of our Christian faith. This awakening ‘experiential’ knowledge of God’s indwelling presence has been central for us in our personal lives and in our spiritual direction ministry.
What is meant by the Divine Indwelling? Divine indwelling is the life of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit living within us. As a doctrine, it points to the prime source of the spiritual life, which is the purpose of the divine Trinity living within us. It enables us to listen and be receptive to the inspirations of the Spirit. To be enjoyed, it needs to be continuously recognized and affirmed. Divine Indwelling is also known as the Divine Presence within.

We are created for this union with God. It is God’s wonderful plan that every human being participates in this divine life, here on earth and more completely in eternity. God chooses to accomplish this intimate union in a very personal way – by abiding within the very deepest recesses of our person. Yes, this is the mystery – God really and truly dwells within us. Chapter 3 speaks of our gradual growth in awareness of this Divine union and invites us to ponder anew the familiar “Footprints in the Sand” poem.
Sublime as this spiritual truth is, we hope that you will yearn for this indwelling Presence and embrace it as precious gift. We have not only walked the journey ourselves, but have also listened to stories of many others from various walks of life who have, with time and patience, come to know, love and enjoy this Divine companionship. The final chapter suggests eight practices that cultivate this awareness of the Presence of God in daily life. We encourage you to be faithful to this mindfulness practice for it brings you “a peace the world cannot give” John 14:27.

In these pages you will read how Moses, an on-the-run-murderer, became God’s chosen leader of the Hebrew people. And Paul, that bold persecutor of the early Christians, became God’s instrument and a champion of Gospel evangelization. Yes, God’s expansive love includes everyone. We are born with an innate capacity for divine union. Believing this, changes everything! YOU are created for this wonderful communion with God. The Divine indwelling mystery is the Source which animates the life and ministry of mature seekers.
